How To...

Hand Restoration of Fine Furniture

First you assess the piece and see if it needs any restoration before the new finish goes on. It is always best to not touch the finish on a fine antique. The original finish is the most desired...but, if you decide to remove the finish and replace it...you should try to make it look as if it had never been touched.

If any re-gluing...or new dowels etc. is needed...this is the time. For maximum strength...we usually knock the whole piece apart and re-glue the whole thing. This also makes it easier to remove the old finish. It is usually more expedient to have a professional do this type of extensive work to a fine piece, but, with a little patience and a lot of elbow grease...you can do it.
